Geodetic Institute of Slovenia, as Lead Partner, is participating in the project BauNOW – Investing in Green and Just Transition for a New Sustainable Business as Usual Economy, implemented under the Interreg Euro-MED Programme and co-funded by the European Union.

The project addresses the challenges of climate change and promotes the search for concrete solutions for a greener and fairer development of cities and regions. Its aim is to support stakeholders at local and regional level in preparing and implementing measures for a green and just transition, with particular attention given to practical solutions, cooperation among partners, and support for planning and financing these measures.

The project runs from 1 January 2024 to 30 September 2026, with a total duration of 33 months. The total project budget amounts to 2.515.153,93 EUR, of which 2.012.123,14 EUR is funded through the Interreg Programme. The eligible budget of the Geodetic Institute of Slovenia amounts to 513.578,80 EUR EUR, of which 410.863,04 EUR is provided through Interreg funding.

The project brings together 10 partners from different Mediterranean countries: Slovenia, France, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Montenegro. As Lead Partner, the Geodetic Institute of Slovenia is responsible for coordinating the partnership, managing project activities, and contributing to the development of joint solutions. It is also involved in pilot activities and in preparing the methodological basis for the practical use of the project tool.

Within the project, the Geodetic Institute of Slovenia is also implementing a pilot activity in the Kočevje area, focused on improving public services in support of the green and just transition, with particular emphasis on accessible and sustainable mobility. This activity contributes to reducing motorised traffic and emissions, while also supporting greater mobility justice and quality of life for local residents.

The project will also develop the Green and Just Transition Dashboard, an online tool with a step-by-step methodology for the preparation, financing, and implementation of measures at local or regional level, to be tested in nine pilot areas across seven countries. In addition, the project will prepare the BauNOW Transferability Plan, which will support the transfer of solutions to other Mediterranean regions and beyond. The expected results of the project include the development and use of a shared tool, the preparation of a common transferability plan, and the strengthening of the institutional capacities of the organisations involved.

More information about the BauNOW project is available on the project’s official website (https://baunow.interreg-euro-med.eu/), where news about project activities, partner meetings, and other updates are also regularly published.

In Ajdovščina, we met the project partners at the project kick-off event coordinated by the Municipality of Ajdovščina and discussed the upcoming project activities. The afternoon part of the meeting was dedicated to a tour of the Vipava Cross.

The common challenge addressed by IN4SAFETY is to establish cooperation for disaster risk prevention and climate change risk reduction, which necessitates the need for a more coordinated response to natural disasters in the programme area.

As part of the project, we will establish a helicopter emergency response plan for faster and more efficient rescue operations.

In March 2023 we launched the European project CE-Spaces4All or “Accessible Spaces for All” as a lead partner of the project. The three-year project, worth EUR 2.65 million, is co-financed under the Interreg Central Europe programme (more at https://www.interreg-central.eu/projects/ce-spaces4all/).

The project aims to stimulate the development of accessible tourism in Central Europe in 7 European countries by enhancing spatial management and involving decision-makers at the municipal and regional levels, the tourism sector, disability organizations, and person with disabilities. Accessible tourism is an industry with significant growth potential, considering that there are approximately 87 million people with disabilities in the EU alone (according to UNWTO). By improving accessibility, the project aims to positively impact the quality of life for disabled individuals, enhancing their mobility, employment opportunities and social inclusion.

The project’s focus is on addressing the needs of persons with disabilities and creating conditions for their independent and safe travel in three cross-border pilot areas: Slovenia-Croatia-Hungary, Austria-Czech Republic, and Poland. These regions are selected to actively involve people with various disabilities, such as mobility impairments, visual impairments, and hearing impairments. Additionally, the project prioritizes tourist areas outside urban centers, as they often present more challenges in terms of accessibility and mobility for the target group.

Picture 1: Accessibility of the train station

The creation of an online accessibility viewer will be an essential tool for providing valuable information about the accessibility. This viewer will display accessible routes, identify obstacles along the way, and showcase accessible or potentially accessible facilities in carefully selected tourist areas. Furthermore, a more detailed catalogues of obstacles will be developed which can help decision-makers implement targeted improvements and increase overall accessibility. New tourism services and products for persons with disabilities will be developed with the involvement of local tourism providers, such as the development of organised tourism programmes for persons with disabilities or self-guided tours tailored to their needs.

The project’s recommendations to decision-makers based on the data collected and the needs of persons with disabilities will play a crucial role in driving policy changes and strategic improvements, such as local action plans or the preparation of a joint territorial planning strategy for accessible tourism, which will promote coordination and cooperation among different regions and have a lasting impact on promoting accessibility throughout Central Europe.

Finally, the key activity is raising awareness about the opportunities of accessible tourism and encouraging private and public investment in improving accessibility, creating a more inclusive and welcoming tourism landscape for everyone.

Picture 2: Demonstration of the wheelchair barrier

During the first months of the project, the 12 project partners have become well acquainted with the topic of accessibility and disability, along with European legislation in this field, the production of accessible digital materials, the organisation of accessible events and the needs of persons with disabilities in relation to accessible tourism.

Two project meetings were held in Ljubljana and Vienna, where participants learned about good and bad practices in the field of accessibility, provide valuable insights and a platform for knowledge exchange among partners.

Picture 3: Kick- off meeting in Ljubljana, 13. 4. 2023

Project partners are currently holding meetings with local stakeholders in their pilot areas to ascertain their interests and possibilities for cooperation, which is a key step for the successful development of the project and the preparation of joint accessible tourism products and services.

An interactive presentation of the Slovenian territory in the ancient and late antique period

Geodetic Institute of Slovenia has been spreading knowledge about new possibilities of didactic aids for many years and hosting students of different age groups in terms of presenting various solutions of spatial representations (from pre-school to high school groups). Such presentations and contacts with students and teachers confirmed the lack of materials, as well as great interest in modern forms of spatial representations which with the help of digital cartographic content and virtual reality make it easier to perceive geographical content, as well as spatial orientation and location of individual events or activities.

We include the production of geocoded teaching aids in digital form and online, such as electronic thematic maps, web maps, geographic information systems, interactive maps, multimedia spatial environments and atlases, dynamic 3-dimensional presentations, navigation and orientation in virtual and real space, connection GPS position maps, spatial games and quizzes

For the purpose of faster and efficient perception of content compared to written materials and a different way of learning historical processes we have developed E-content, a set of various educational interactive contents that offer geoinformation support related to space for educational purposes.

Students get knowledge with depictions of historical events through placement in space which enables a multifaceted connection of natural and anthropogenic conditions over a longer period of time. Time component is also added in addition to the three-dimensional realities of the real environment.

With the help of E-content students can come to certain conclusions on their own. In this way, they develop the ability to learn independently and connect the learning content of various school subjects and current social events. With the help of visualization their knowledge is more in-depth and long lasting. They further develop their skills regarding the use of various information technologies and raise competencies in this field.

The developed materials follow the following principles:

easy and intuitive to use

regular updating of the content (we provide the possibility of reambulation)

high level of interactivity

high quality of produced maps (appropriate positional accuracy, appropriate design and generalization).

In the online presentation of the Slovenian territory in the ancient and late antique period different forms of E-content were used:

thematic maps

interactive maps

dynamic presentations

knowledge tests (quizzes, spatial quizzes).

We present a web display of Roman roads in Slovenian territory with a descriptive part.
